I just received an Xbox360 Arcade Edition, and it comes with a card that explains there is 1 month free Gold-level subscription for new subscribers with purchase of any new Xbox 360 console.
Xbox Live is the online service for Xbox 360. There are 2 levels -- a free level called "Silver" and a paid level called "Gold". The official Xbox website explains it best: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/live/gettingst...
[**edit**] -- The card is with the instruction books in the plastic packet. It just explains that any new subscriber gets a free month with new console purchase.

Yes, a free month of Gold membership does come with the 360. With Gold you can play online. However once you run out of gold you go back to silver, which lets you do everything else except play online.
I havn't heard of Xbox online, and as far as i know, its just another name for Xbox Live.
