i have been trying to have trouble connecting to xbox live, but does a MOTOROLA SBV5220 cable modem work to connect to xbox live?

Yes, you should have no problem connecting your Xbox to any standard cable modem. Are you connecting the Xbox directly to the cable modem? If so you will need to reset and/or power cycle the modem whenever you change the networking device is connected to (computer, router, xbox, etc.). This is because the modem binds to the first device that connects to it and has to be reset so it will bind to a new device.
