Canadians: Why do you think Americans think you live in igloos?

I've been to Canada a lot, mostly to visit relatives and I've noticed that Canadians have this belief that Americans think Canadians live in igloo's. If you search the words "Canadians" and "igloos" on Yahoo Answers, you will come across hundreds of questions from Canadians like "Why do Americans think Canadians live in igloos?" ... "Are Americans stupid? They think us Canadians live in igloos?".

I've lived in the U.S. all my life and never come across anyone who thinks Canadians live in igloo's. To be honest, I'm sure this all started with a late night TV show joke that angered Canadians and it eventually turned into "Americans think Canadians live in igloos" and this gets passed on to Canadian children who grow up to believe this.

Canadians, do you have any proof that an average American has ever stated that you live in igloos?

Canadians: Why do you think Americans think you live in igloos?

I have never heard this...%26amp; if I did, I must have dismissed it offhand, because it was so ridiculous. I have traveled to Canada lots of times, to both ends...still working on getting to the middle!

Canadians: Why do you think Americans think you live in igloos?

You mean, they dont ?

Canadians: Why do you think Americans think you live in igloos?

lol... ive never even thought of that before. usually igloos make me think of inuits, but canadians?? never. but, there isnt an intelligence test given with a user name on this site so just because they can type doesnt mean they know what theyre saying.

Canadians: Why do you think Americans think you live in igloos?

haha I've lived in America for ever too and I've never heard of Canadians living in igloos!

Canadians: Why do you think Americans think you live in igloos?

american republicans will belittle any one on the planet,

Canadians: Why do you think Americans think you live in igloos?

It doesn't matter what Canadians think the average American thinks.

They have to put down Americans anyway possible. You have to understand Canada. Canada has no identity. The only way they, and the rest of the world for that matter, identifies Canada is that they are NOT the US. Therefore they need to find ways (usually showing the US in a negative light) to show how they are not the US.

Edit:

To myopinion, thanks for proving my point.

Canadians: Why do you think Americans think you live in igloos?

Well some Canadians did live in igloos ..

They were used as temporary shelters by Eskimo's when they went out hunting , which would have takin days, weeks before they returned to their homes ..

The problem is I think and don't take this as a slam on Americans but they are pre - occupied with themselves , more world history and geography classes or subjects should help this ..I don't think this is much of a problem any more but I still hear of some Americans coming up to Canada in the summer hoping to go skiing ( snow ) .. try to explain to a Texan just how big Ontario is ... ( texas =261,797 square miles ) ( Ontario =415,598 sq mi)

And harry ... you are typical of what the problem is .. for your information Canada does have an identity and we are a nation a country all on our own we have natural resources , land mass , we have smart people , rich people . poor people and i even some rude people just like you do in the US ..except we dont marry our cousins ..

oh gee harry .. you missed my point here ..the cousins part is another stereo type commonly accosciated with red necks or people living in certain parts of the US .. I for one have no problems with americans in general otherwise I wouldnt be engaged to one .. my grandfather was a US citizen and many of my friends are as well ...and I will soon be re locating to the great state of TN ...but what I suggest is that you spend some time in Canada .. you will be surprised how well you will be treated and remember this .. Canada is one of the several countires that provides free health care for its citizens ..instead of spening that money on cruise missels ...opps did I just open up a can of worms ??

Canadians: Why do you think Americans think you live in igloos?

I've lived in the US all my life, and have visited Canada many times, on both coasts. Of course, I never saw igloos in that beautiful country (probably didn't get far enough north). But I've never heard anybody in the US claiming that Canadians live in igloos. This is more of the "US citizens are ignorant" bs.

Canadians: Why do you think Americans think you live in igloos?

i'm with you tiffany. i have lived quite a while now, and have been to canada many times, had some friends there once, and i've NEVER heard an american OR a canadian mention igloos in regard to shelter...it must all be the work of the cbc, the canadian equivalent of cnn. the media of every country knows that it's citizens will swallow just about anything they are spoon fed...sad, but true.

Canadians: Why do you think Americans think you live in igloos?

I thought Eskimos (or Inuits) lived in igloos! LOL. Geez, I hope I don't piss anyone off.

Canadians: Why do you think Americans think you live in igloos?

No, only those of us who are ill travelled and stupid actually think you guys think we live in igloos. There are common stereotypes, however, we do find hilarious.

Canadians: Why do you think Americans think you live in igloos?

I suspect part of the problem might be that I know a lot of people who like to go down to the States and tell Americans that we live in Igloos as a joke. (Or talk about getting their polar bear riding license or about how they've never seen grass before etc...) If you've ever heard of Rick Mercer, a Canadian Television host on CBC; he used to do a bit where he'd go down to the states and ask Americans questions along the same lines. (Because of Global Warming our national igloo is melting, any suggestions? Etc...)

That would be my theory on where Canadians got this idea. I realise that most Americans don't actually believe a lot of this, but they don't generally know much about Canadian culture, so they're not about to disagree.

On another note, the Inuits in the north do build igloos as temporary shelter in the winter when they hunt. So some Canadians do actually live in Igloos.
