Hi friends, i am currently working at industrial units with a possible live wire, I am told all the wires have been switch of from the fuse boxs, but i am still a bit wary ( could they still be live??). I would like to test these wires, so would this device be suitable bearing in mind it industrial unit http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?Modu...
thank you
Live electric wire??? testing?
You know what, i would if i were you get an electrician to sort this, like has said before if you have a three phase supply you will not do your self any favors by getting a shock, i have seen the results of electrical burns on someone lucky enough to survive, belive me it looks nasty and smells horrible as well.
At least if you are going to mess with it get a proper multi meter.

Just touch the wire real quick and see if you get zapped!! Just kidding. A tester like should work just fine. They also sell voltage detectors that may be cheaper. It is usually a small device that has a light and speaker built into it. If you hold the device near the wire it will beep and the light will flash rapidly. This may be safer because it does not require you to actually touch anything to the wire.

it is only as good as the test screwdriver
try this one

having re read the question i now agree with shyguy and the tank, you are unqualified to do this work and would definately be breaking the law by doing so. so therefore do not continue to do so

I've got a small electrical screw driver it's got a small light in it you hold your finger/thumb on the end if it's live it lights up dirt cheap %26amp; simple

Problem with that unit is it only goes to 240v and a lot of the industrial stuff will be 3 phase 400v. You really, really don't wanna touch that as it's much harder to get away from (being 3 phase).
Maybe best off with one of those screwdriver voltage detectors as that doesn't need to touch anything and will give you plenty of warning. Remember, you really don't want to get too close to it either.
I would also remove the fuses and keep them yourself, then you can be sure no idiot will plug them back in (assuming they're removable).

Yall don't utilize electrical lockout/tag out procedures?

Neither of those testers are GS38 compliant.
That means you don't satisfy the EAWR (1989).
If you don't feel competent to work on this, them refuse.
It's your life and limbs.

Well said Pauline. Especially those electrical test screwdrivers which can be very dangerous if faulty. A little knowledge can be dangerous and you don't even appear to have a little on this subject, so accept your limitations and use a professional who knows what they are doing.
Live electric wire??? testing?
i,m with pauline on this one ,plus if you are not a "competant person",and its obvious your not, then it would be dangerous and illegal for you to work on this !!
ps".competant person" is a legal term used to define a trained individual

Sorry, but you must stop doing this work now.
By law these days, under Part P of the Building Regulations, an unqualified person (you) must not undertake any industrial electrical work.
A qualified person would already know what to do in the situation that you have and will also have the correct equipment. The fact that you are relying on what "you've been told" and don't know how to confirm the electical isolation for yourself show that you're not qualified.
If you do electrocute yourself then you and the person employing you may be liable for prosecution under building law and the Health and Safety at Work act. If you electrocute anyone else then very serious charges may follow.
