Is it required to live together for at least a year before you can sponsor your spouse to immigrate?

My boyfriend lives in the US, and I live in Canada. We've been in a relationship for 2 years now, and want to live together permanently here in Canada. We havn't lived together for at least a year yet, but we've spent months together, but not a year. My question is, is it required that we live together for at least a year before we get married and then soon after sponsor him as a spouse? Or would this seem bad to the immigration officer handling our case?

I've already answered this question.

12 months together if you are commonlaw and NOT married, but you need lots of proof. Yes the entire 12 months is required.

You can apply immediately if you are married. No you dont need to live together before getting married, but you should have a dating relationship, seeing each other fairly regularly etc etc.

You also need proof of your developing relationship and photos of the wedding.

I was married within 10 months of first meeting my canadian spouse, and I am now a PR in Canada.

i dont see as it should raise any problems as you will no doubt be well investigated and if your free from any previous convictions for whatever then all should be OK Good Luck to you both

My daughter never lived with her fiance at all. All you have to do is show that you have a relationship and that it is of duration and is based on more than internet romance.

Proof of an ongoing relationship is all that's required, and as the above poster said, more than just instant messages.

Provide details of all visits to each other, lots of photos of the two of you together and letters from family and friends that know the two of you as a couple.

Good luck!

Dear Madam,

My name is George, I work for Immigroup Immigration in Toronto. Let me try and help you out.

Your'e not a unique case. There are a few Canadians out there who, like yourself, have a loved one overseas (with whom they have never lived with), get married, and are able to successfully file a sponsorship application.

The requirement of living together for one year is only required for common-law partners. If you get married you don't have to worry about that.

Let me talk about the application. In order to be successful, you must demonstrate to the immigration officers that your relationship is genuine and not one of convenience. Successful applications will end being about a few hundred pages of forms and supporting documentation. It is important that you include the smallest of details in your application.

Here is a link to a video we put together on the sponsorship process. http://www.immigroup.com/articles.php?id...
