Question about live lobster at our grocery store?

My boys love to watch the lobster in the tank at the grocery store. We cannot afford to eat lobster and I doubt that I could put a live creature into boiling water (dead one's are a different story) LOL but anyway: The boys noticed that attached to several of the lobster on their hard outer shell are these hard white bumps with a hole in the middle. Some of these bumps appear to have something living inside? What are they? Is there something living inside the little white shell/carbunkle type thing? Another creature? Babies? Can someone help me out with this? Thanks!

The white bumps you saw were barnacles. They are invertabrate that attach themselves to the shell of other sea going animals. Interestingly, they are distantly related to the lobster. Those little feathery things you see moving inside help the barnacle filter feed from the water.

These are small clam-like creatures that live on the lobster. They do no harm and both live in perfect harmony.

Without seeing a picture, it sounds like a barnacle. Lobster eggs are stored under the tail, so they aren't lobster babies. Lobsters can't feel pain, so tossing them in boiling water is purely an issue on the human end, but you can always jab a sharp knife rear of the eyes to kill it. You might want to toss it in the freezer for a few minutes to lessen death spasms. Joy of Cooking and other common cookbooks should have visuals of how to do this properly.
